Bircher Muesli with Apple and Walnuts

Why it helps

Oats are a good source of soluble fibre, which can contribute to a slower rise in blood sugar and support digestive health. Walnuts add omega-3 ALA and healthy fats, while the grated apple provides natural sweetness along with additional fibre, without relying on added sugar. This combination fits well into a balanced breakfast pattern that supports steady energy through the morning.

Ingredients

1 cup rolled oats
1 cup milk of choice (dairy or unsweetened plant-based)
1/2 cup plain yogurt or quark
1 medium apple, grated (skin on)
1 tablespoon walnuts, chopped
1 tablespoon chia seeds or ground flaxseed
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon honey (optional)
Fresh berries, for topping (optional)

Methods

In a bowl or jar, combine the rolled oats, milk, and yogurt or quark.
Stir in the grated apple, chia seeds or flaxseed, and cinnamon.
Add honey if using, and mix well.
Cover and refrigerate overnight, or for at least 4 hours.
Before serving, stir and add a splash more milk if the mixture is too thick.
Top with chopped walnuts and fresh berries, if using.
Serve cold.
